NYC Magic Meets Psychological Thriller

Magic Fail: Unlucky 7

Magic. At its best, you are witness to a modern miracle. At its worst, you question how it is still a viable form of entertainment. So here is a list of the 7 worst magic moments caught on video.

Viewer Warning: While some of these videos are hysterical, several of them are quite gruesome, so viewer discretion is advised.

7) Ted Kwan Levitation Fail

If you plan on performing on stage, avoid the following: TERRIBLE lines and delivery, horrible illusions, and making major mistakes in the spotlight. Ted Kwan manages to do all three. If this guy was to get a nickname, it would have to be ‘the butcher’, because that is exactly what he did to the art of illusion in this clip.

6) Levitation fail…again

It’s difficult to understand why some magician’s believe that using dramatic music will mask a terrible performance. The performer here would have benefited significantly if he had seen the Ted Kwan video above. At least the dramatic slow-motion fall got a great laugh.

5) German hand stab

I hate this trick and every variation of it. I personally know two people that hurt themselves badly performing it, and I just don’t see its dramatic appeal. It’s bad enough when you mess a trick up on stage in front of dozens or hundreds of people, but when you do it on live tv, there’s just no saving you.

4) Britain’s Got Talent – Duck Illusion

There’s just something so satisfying when cheesy magic goes wrong. The duck messing up the trick made the routine about ten thousand times more entertainment than it ever would have been. Terrible illusion, great laughs.

3) Kristen Johnson drowns

Kristen Johnson is an idiot. I don’t care about how qualified you claim to be. If you are performing a dangerous stunt in front of children, you better have quick fail-safes built in. It’s not about you dying, it’s about scarring the poor kids when they have to see you drown. Lucky for her, Mrs. Johnson survived, unlucky for everyone else, she kept on performing that illusion afterwards.

The question is, what’s so impressive about her version of the ‘water torture cell’? She’s definitely no Harry Houdini, nor does she have the personal appeal to pull it off. Is she showing off that she can manually, non-magically open those locks, or that she can hold her breath for four minutes? Neither feat is particularly appealing. I just don’t get it, and neither did the audience.

2) Illusion gone wrong

Another hysterical mess-up. From the first seconds of the routine you could tell that things were going downhill fast. First, his movements were confused and uncoordinated. Every part of the routine seemed unrehearsed and pathetic. And worst of all, he’s using Lady Gaga to accompany the routine…

He got what he earned. Just because you spend a ton of cash buying an illusion, doesn’t mean that the final product will be any good. If this guy got off of his self-gratifying high-horse, maybe he would have enough sense to think about the audiences experience, and not his look. People like him are the reason that illusionists are so hated among the general population.

1) Magician stabs volunteer from the audience

(Skip to the 1:17 mark to see the part in question)

Knife In Cup Magic Accident – Watch more Funny Videos

In the above videos, at least some of them were funny. This one makes me livid. Any trick that even remotely puts the audience and any danger should NEVER, EVER be done. This guy should have his face shown to the world and never perform again, I can’t believe that someone actually blurred him out. Tricks go wrong, I don’t care how good you think you are; if you have any level of danger in your act, then you will eventually get hurt. It’s just the law of averages. If you think that you can get away with putting your audience at risk, then you ought to be imprisoned for being a menace to the public.

And that’s the list. Please comment below if you are as outraged by some of these clips as I am.
